Building Community Leaders
Since 1997, Leadership Beaverton has prepared 320+ citizens to improve our community through service and participation.
Leadership Beaverton's mission statement is "To develop a diverse network of visionary civic and business leaders who act in accordance with the principles of community-centered stewardship."
What is Leadership Beaverton?
Leadership Beaverton grew from a desire for more knowledgeable volunteers, board members and elected officials in the city.
The purpose of Leadership Beaverton is to provide training so that better decisions are in our community. Each summer 25 students are accepted for the program, which runs from September through May.
Students dedicate one full day a month to an interactive community learning experience. They increase experience presentations and discussions on topics that include Beaverton history, government, human services and quality of life. When the program concludes, participants have a better understanding of how our community has developed and what needs exist.
Each graduating class completes a service project fulfilling a community need. Some examples:
- The 1999 class built the first Habitat for the Humanity home in Beaverton.
- The class of 2002 planned Senior PALs Day, an open house at the Beaverton Police Activities League for PAL youth members and local senior citizens, to foster relationships between youth and seniors.
- The class of 2005 worked to produce a public awareness campaign about IgiveWhereIlive.net - a community resources that connects people in Washington County to local charities to keep our giving local!
- The class of 2006 worked for the Oregon Food Bank and has raised $6,000 for the Care-to-Share backpack program to purchase and supply an additional 300 backpacks for needy students in the Beaverton School District.
- The 2008 class is working on a variety of ways to raise dollars for the Homeless Youth program for the Beaverton School District. Join them by supporting their efforts through the Tualatin Hills Parks Foundation June 14th Hike-n-Bike. Bike, hike, walk or pledge your support.
- 2009 has created TAKE CARE OF BEAVERTON week - May 4 - 9th. They are collecting good for Sunshine Pantry, Beaverton Clothes Closet and Elsie Stuhr Center.
- The class of 2010 did 3 projects! Boxers for Beaverton (supporting St. Mary's Home for Boys & the BSD Homeless Youth program), Adopted room at the Good Neighbor Center and the Domestic Violence Resource Center's Monika's House!
Costs
Tuition for the program is $725 (Preferred Chamber Members) and $825 (Non - Members) and includes lunchtime meals on each program day. $50 dollars of the tuition is put into a donation fund which may be used for the class project or donated to a worthy non-profit selected by the "Perfect Attendance Club" at the end of the program year. Scholarships are available to participants who cannot afford the full tuition and whose companies do not provide funding for professional development. Scholarships are usually partial and average $200.
